Sports Opportunities and Requirements
Purpose of Sports
Sports is a crucial part of a student-athlete’s education. To play sports at a high level, student-athletes must work hard, exhibit discipline, and work within a team. As a pathway to Pearl-Cohn, it is important for our student-athletes and families to know that sports are a path toward college success. Several Division I schools regularly recruit from Pearl-Cohn. To that end, we strive to have a high-performing sports program at John Early.
Sports Offered
- Fall – Football, Volleyball, Girls Soccer, Cheer

Student-Athletes
Academic Requirements
Student-athletes at John Early must maintain at least a C average in English / Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Grades will be checked each Monday morning. If a student-athlete has a D or F in any of the core subjects, they will be suspended from the team for the period of one school week. After that week, grades will be checked again. If the student has raised their grade average to a C or higher, they can rejoin the team. If a student-athlete is suspended from sports three times for low academics, they will be permanently removed from that team.
Attendance Requirements
Student-athletes at John Early must maintain a 95% attendance average. Attendance will be checked each Monday morning. If a student-athlete has an attendance average lower than 95%, they will be suspended from the team for the period of one school week. After that week, attendance will be checked again.
If the student has raised their attendance average to 95% or higher, they can rejoin the team. If a student-athlete is suspended from sports three times for low attendance, they will be permanently removed from that team.
*A student-athlete must be present for the whole school day to be able to participate or attend any sports practices or games that day.
Behavior Requirements
Student-athletes at John Early must maintain good behavior, as evidenced by behavior referrals. If a student-athlete receives a behavior referral that results in an In-School Suspension, they will be suspended from the team for the period of one school week.
If a student-athlete receives a behavior referral that results in an Out-of-School Suspension, they will be suspended from the team for the period of two school weeks. If a student-athlete receives a behavior referral for an expellable offense (Level 400 or 500), they will be permanently removed from the team and be suspended from sports for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year.
Family Involvement
Family support is vital to the success of our student-athletes. It is the school’s expectation that families ensure their children are at practices and games on time. It is also the school’s expectation the families secure transportation from practices and games back to home. It is an insurance liability and is not considered best practice for a staff member to take a student at home. If that is the only option, the parent/guardian must communicate permission in writing (text/email/note) that excuses staff from all liability.
Uniforms
If a student-athlete does not return a uniform within one week of the end of the season, the family will be charged $100 to replace that uniform.
Sports Physicals
Sports Physicals must be turned in to the school office before student-athletes participate in any conditioning, practices, or games.
Fees
There is a $25 fee for each student-athlete per sport. This is to be paid via GoFan. Do not turn in cash or check to anyone at the school for any reason. There are no refunds for sports fees.
Sports Suspension
To be suspended from a sport means that the student-athlete cannot attend or participate in any team activities, meetings, practices, or games.
