What is the Vanderbilt Model School?

John Early is collaborating with Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College, widely recognized as one of the top education schools in the United States, to serve as a university model school. This learning community brings university faculty, graduate students and teacher candidates together with John Early educators  with the purpose of increasing scholar achievement. The collaboration provides research-based professional learning for John Early teachers, tutoring for John Early scholars, hands-on experience for Vanderbilt students, and a rich relationship between John Early and Vanderbilt that extends to college experiences.

Every scholar deserves access to rigorous learning, and with John Early serving as the only middle school with direct pathways to both Hume-Fogg and Pearl-Cohn high schools, this program prepares scholars for academic success with either pathway they choose.

What Scholars & Teachers Experience

All John Early scholars are part of the model  school community at no cost. Activities are located on the John Early campus and at Vanderbilt University for select events and field experiences.

  • Professional learning for teachers provided by Vanderbilt faculty
  • Opportunities for scholars to learn on Vanderbilt’s campus
  • Support for implementing innovative curriculum to enhance academic opportunities and experiences for all scholars.

Results & Impact

  • Tutoring hours delivered per semester: ~850
  • Growth in literacy and numeracy: TVAAS Level 5 (Composite) for 2024-2025
    • By May 2025, 60% of scholars met or exceeded growth targets in reading and 74% of scholars met or exceeded growth targets in math as measured by FastBridge Screening Reports
